About The Role
An Arboricultural Officer plays an essential role in the preservation and enhancement of green spaces in the borough. They will lead in the arboricultural function of the Development Management Team assisting in the delivery of landscape proposals for major sites, process applications for works to protected trees and proactively manage and monitor the Councils tree register to ensure key elements of the Councils Green Recovery Strategy are delivered.
The post requires a candidate who has a passion for both preserving the boroughs green assets while delivering a built environment to achieve the council’s aspirations for a cleaner, greener borough and mentor other officers in Arboricultural matters. The candidate must carry a caseload of tree applications and have the confidence and capability to engage with and advise developers, residents and senior officers in tree matters.
About The Team You’ll Be Working In
Hounslow are looking for an Arboricultural Officer to join their award-winning Development Management Team. The team are currently working on a wealth of planning applications critical to the social and economic wellbeing of the borough. We have high housing targets to achieve, new schools to place children in and need to create opportunities for employers who want to be in our well located borough. This must be balanced against acting on the boroughs Climate Emergency and with Green Belt, listed buildings, conservation areas and River Thames frontage that need protecting. All this needs to be delivered while playing a crucial supporting role in delivering the boroughs partnerships and values.
About You
- Able to carry a caseload of tree works applications and appeals and determine these within set deadlines in accordance with quality indicators. Able to work flexibly in a changing environment responding quickly to conflicting workloads and changing priorities.
- Able to offer clear advice on landscaping, green infrastructure and climate change and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver on major planning projects in the interest of the borough and its residents.
- Able to communicate in a sensitive and effective manner both orally and in writing and able to deal effectively with Members, the public, officers in other departments and outside organisations
- Able to demonstrate effective negotiation skills both inside and outside the authority, e.g. ability in engaging and negotiating trees works and landscaping schemes with complex competing priorities
- To maintain an up to date technical knowledge of tree related legislation, principles and practice including knowledge of climate science and planning law and impart knowledge to a team.
