Arboricultural Officer Wanted - St Albans

Arboriculturalist St Albans, South East (United Kingdom) Full Time£39,000 - £44,000 (GBP)

About the job

About the role

Trees provide social, environmental, and economic benefits to St Albans. This is a key and exciting role where you will work as part of a professional team responsible for conserving and managing the Council’s trees and woodlands. This entails surveying trees, liaison with contractors, making safety critical decisions and managing public and Councillor relations.

In this role, you will provide specialist professional landscape & arboricultural knowledge and advice whilst seeking to safeguard the district’s natural heritage, promote environmental quality for the people, businesses, and community of St Albans.  A key part of the role is to ensure compliance with statutory provisions and corporate policy.

We manage 49,000 trees, have over 1,000 Tree Preservation Orders, and there are more than 19 Conservation Areas. The team advise on a proportion of the 3,500 planning applications submitted every year where they have implications for significant trees as well as managing approximately 800 applications for tree works including Conservation Area notifications.

St Albans has a higher-than-average tree canopy cover at over 23%, which needs to be maintained and enhanced. Development pressure, climate change, and an ageing tree population, requires the Council to apply the highest standards of arboricultural principles and practice to protect trees and to maintain and enhance the quality of the local environment.
