So what are the tree surgery courses in England that you can study to become an arborist? 

In England, there are 23 colleges which offer arboriculture courses, tree surgery courses and forestry courses. However, based on our criteria, perhaps some are better than others based on their location, the number of courses on offer, and the wages on offer in that area once you have graduated.

To pick the best colleges that offer tree surgery and arborist courses, we have used the following information about each college to reach our conclusion. Our data includes:

  1. Location: Here we will assess the location of the college, judging its proximity to local amenities, train stations, A roads and motorways, but also areas of natural beauty. 
  2. Number And Variety Of Courses Offered: More isn’t always better, however, our scoring will benefit colleges which offer dedicated T-Level and apprenticeship courses, adult and school-leaver-appropriate courses, as well as short-course learning. 
  3. The Adequacy Of The Facilities At The College: The facilities on campus can make a good college great. We’ve assessed the facilities at each college, as well as on-site accommodation and sports facilities, and whether the college has on-site arboricultural workshops. 
  4. Average Wages In That Area: We have prioritised colleges located in areas where arborists and tree surgeons have higher average wages, based on our data from 2018 to 2023. Location: Located just southeast of Bedford, Shuttleworth College is very near Biggleswade and Biggleswade train station. This allows Shuttleworth College to have amazing commuter links between Peterborough, the Home Counties, and London. Luton is about an hour south of the college, and Cambridge sits slightly northeast.

Pegsdon Hills and Hoo Bit Nature Reserve are local to the college, and Biggleswade Town has lots of amenities, should you need to travel.

Excellent Facilities: In the Preston centre, Myerscough has a purpose-built National Arboriculture Centre which houses an indoor climbing room and chainsaw workshop. Onsite Arboretum: The Preston site has an arboretum featuring the national collection of Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) trees. The campus includes a Pinetum which contains two Giant Redwoods amongst other coniferous trees.

The Croxteth Campus encompasses 500 acres of Country Park, including 200 acres of woodland designated as a Local Nature Reserve. The estate is home to many mature and specialist tree specimens that are of great arboricultural and historical interest.

This means that, if you have insufficient maths and English grades, you may still take the arborist apprenticeship, and study either (or both) whilst you learn about arboriculture. 

In Summary: Holme Lacy is an excellent college, with a diverse range of long and short-term courses on offer. The rural location may be perfect for those looking to get away from the city. Unfortunately, unless you drive, getting to Holme Lacy may be difficult. The college doesn’t facilitate accommodation, but the 454 and 453 bus services operate regularly to the college.
