Title:   Forestry Team Leader (Bolton Abbey)

Accountable to:  Forestry Manager Bolton Abbey

Direct Reports:   The Forestry Workers

Purpose of the Post:  To assist the Forestry Manager in managing a profitable commercial forestry business and deliver our objectives regarding Countryside Stewardship and the UKWAS certification at Bolton Abbey.

 Main Duties:

• Working with the Forestry Manager to organise agreed work programs and prioritise works
• Ensuring the works are carried out to a high standard and in timely fashion.
• To lead and take responsibility for the forestry team
• To carry out all forestry tasks individually or as part of a team
• Forestry maintenance operations including planting, fencing, walling, bracken weeding and spraying
• Chainsaw operations, including cross-cutting, felling, clearing wind blow and thinning
• Tree surgery work, including tree climbing, chainsaw work and chipping
• To oversee the maintenance of all forestry vehicles and equipment. Organising and planning all relevant equipment safety checks e.g... LOLER
• Working as part of a team or alone without direct supervision
• Interacting with other departments on the estate
• Always working safely, being aware of your own and others health and safety. Taking responsibility for the health and safety of the forestry team and at worksites
• To ensure all work is carried out to the high standard required
• As a representative of Bolton Abbey Estate, being friendly, helpful, polite and enthusiastic when dealing with members of the public and other estate staff
• Having a flexible approach to carrying out other work on the Estate including:
• Cutting, splitting and delivering firewood
• Tractor driving, including towing trailers and operating the forwarding trailer
• Undertaking any training required

Preferred Skills

Qualifications in:

chainsaw, tree climbing, tractor driving, general forestry work.

About the Company

Bolton Abbey Estate (Chatsworth Settlement Trustees)

The Estate manages 1,500 acres of woodland, comprising broadleaf and coniferous woodland.  The woodlands are managed for commercial, conservation and amenity purposes.

We recognise our role in addressing global sustainability challenges such as climate change, natural resource shortages and declining biodiversity.

Our Forestry team work hard to ensure their carbon footprint is kept as small as possible. They do this by;

• Undertaking an extensive replanting programme in the winter months, designed to ensure there is a continued timber supply.
• Taking great care in managing the woodlands to ensure habitats are protected and conserved, especially in Strid Wood, one of our SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) areas.

The Estate’s commercial woodland is primarily used for firewood, saw logs, pallet wood and chip wood, with all timber extracted directly from the woodland. Through our commitment to renewable technology this will change, with timber being used in our biomass installations and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
